Ethnography: A Workshop on Radical Attention – Discover the Art of Seeing Deeply

In a world of fast takes, quick scrolls, and shrinking attention spans, what does it mean to pay radical attention? From war zones to wildflowers, from social unrest to intimate rituals—anthropology invites us to pause, witness, and think deeply.
This October, step into the practice of seeing, listening, and writing with intent through “Ethnography: A Workshop on Radical Attention” at the Sambhaavnaa Institute in Himachal Pradesh.
Whether you’re an artist, student, academic, or just a curious human, this four-day immersive program offers an introduction to ethnography not just as a method, but as a way of being.

Workshop Structure: What You’ll Learn
Over the four days, participants will move through a rhythm of reading, seeing, reflecting, discussing, and writing.
Day 1: The Art of Attention
Practices of seeing, being present, and early exercises in speaking from observation. Learn how to tune in—not just observe.
Day 2: Ethnography Through Texts
Two rich ethnographic writings—one poetic, one narrative—will be close-read, discussed, and reframed in our current contexts.
Day 3: Research & Reflection
Participants will revisit or construct research questions using ethnographic tools, understanding how this practice can shape social inquiry.
Day 4: Writing & Sharing
A writing workshop where each participant shares their ethnographic vignette or early draft. Group critique and discussion complete the circle.

This setting—away from urban urgency—makes it the perfect place to explore something as contemplative as ethnography.
Also, October is one of the most beautiful months to be in Himachal: post-monsoon greenery, crisp weather, and quiet trails for reflection walks.
